Setting Up Photoelectric Sensors
Photoelectric sensors tell the machine where product and film marks are. Setup is mostly discipline: clean optics, honest alignment, teaching at the speed the line actually runs — and a bracket that stays where you put it.
Before You Begin
Identify which sensor you are setting — product detection at the infeed, registration mark reading, or another function — and use the teach procedure from your machine manual for that sensor. The steps below apply to all of them.
Sensor Setup, Step by Step
- STEP 1Clean the lens and reflector. You should see the optical surfaces free of film dust and product residue before any adjustment is judged.
- STEP 2Align the sensor to its target. You should see the beam aimed squarely at the product path or the printed mark position, with the bracket's fixings snug.
- STEP 3Teach at production speed. You should see detection taught while the line runs at operating speed — a setup tuned at standstill does not hold at speed.
- STEP 4Verify over consecutive cycles. You should see the indicator respond to every passing product or mark, with no missed or double detections.
- STEP 5Check the margin. You should see detection remain reliable on the weakest legitimate target — the lightest product or lowest-contrast mark you actually run.
- STEP 6Secure and record. You should see the bracket locked, the cable strain-relieved away from moving parts, and the setup noted in the shift log.
Technical Note
Most sensor "faults" are setup faults: a dirty lens, a bracket nudged during cleaning, or a teach done at the wrong speed. Work through Sensor Alarms: Diagnosis before assuming the sensor itself has failed.
