Adjusting Film Width and Tension
Changing film width is a format changeover on the film side: specification check, mechanical repositioning, tension restore, tracking re-center — then verification on samples before release. This page is the adjustment procedure; for tension faults, see the troubleshooting article.
Before You Begin
Load the recipe qualified for the target product and film. The new reel's width and specification must match what that recipe expects — an oversized web is not a safety margin, and an undersized one cannot be stretched to fit.
Width Changeover, Step by Step
- STEP 1Verify the film specification. You should see the reel label match the loaded recipe's film — width, structure and core.
- STEP 2Load and center the new reel. You should see the reel seated square with the core clamp tight, centered against the machine's reference position.
- STEP 3Reposition the film-path guides. You should see the web centered on every roller and guide, with the guide positions matching the new width's recorded settings.
- STEP 4Restore tension. You should see the tension settings returned to the documented values for the new film — and a web that runs smooth at low speed, without pulsing.
- STEP 5Re-center tracking. You should see the web hold center through the forming area at gradually increasing speed.
- STEP 6Verify on sample packages. You should see seal margins even on both sides and the finished package correct for the new format — only then release the line.
Technical Note
This procedure adjusts the machine to a qualified film. If the film itself is changing — supplier, structure or thickness — that is a re-qualification, not an adjustment: see the film supplier guidance in the FAQ on changing film supplier.
